Self-Similarity in Turbulence
Recent experimental discovery of extended self-similarity (ESS) was one of the most interesting developments, enabling precise determination of the scaling exponents of fully developed turbulence. Here we show that the ESS is consistent with the Navier-Stokes equations, provided the pressure -gradient contributions are expressed in terms of velocity differences in the mean field approximation (...
متن کاملAnomalous self-similarity in two-dimensional turbulence
Our velocity measurements on a quasi-two-dimensional turbulent flow in a rapidly rotating annulus yield an inverse cascade with E(k) ∼ k−2 rather than the expected E(k) ∼ k−5/3. The probability distribution functions for longitudinal velocity differences, δv(r) = v(x + r) − v(x), are self-similar (scale independent) but strongly non-Gaussian, which suggests that the coherent vortices play a sig...
متن کاملIncremental Document Clustering Using Cluster Similarity Histograms
Clustering of large collections of text documents is a key process in providing a higher level of knowledge about the underlying inherent classification of the documents. Web documents, in particular, are of great interest since managing, accessing, searching, and browsing large repositories of web content requires efficient organization. Incremental clustering algorithms are always preferred t...
متن کاملFree Decay of Turbulence and Breakdown of Self-Similarity
It has been generally assumed, since the work of von Karman and Howarth in 1938, that free decay of fully-developed turbulence is self-similar. We present here a simple phenomenological model of the decay of 3D incompressible turbulence, which predicts breakdown of self-similarity for low-wavenumber spectral exponents n in the range nc < n < 4, where nc is some threshold wavenumber. Calculation...
متن کاملIncremental Generation of Plural Descriptions: Similarity and Partitioning
Approaches to plural reference generation emphasise simplicity and brevity, but often lack empirical backing. This paper describes a corpusbased study of plural descriptions, and proposes a psycholinguistically-motivated algorithm for plural reference generation. The descriptive strategy is based on partitioning. An exhaustive evaluation shows that the output closely matches human data.
